Chautauqua Park Dog Photography: Ruby’s Sunrise Session

When people start thinking about dog photos in Boulder, it’s no surprise that Chautauqua Park is usually at the top of the every dog owner’s list. With the sharp peaks of the Flatirons rising directly out of the open meadows, it’s one of the most iconic Front Range landscapes in Colorado.

When planning Ruby’s session, a striking 5 month old Estrela Mountain Dog puppy, her humans knew Chautauqua was the ultimate backdrop for her portraits. Because of her black brindle coat, it was important to time our session so that she would receive plenty of light to catch the sparkle in her eyes without losing the dramatic glow on the peaks behind her.

Chautauqua Park Session Quick Facts

Best Time of Day: Early sunrise (beats the trail crowds & eliminates shooting the entire session backlit).
Dog Leash Rules: Leashes required on all trails unless your dog has a current Boulder OSMP Voice & Sight tag.
Parking & Logistics: Paid parking applies on summer weekends/holidays; free street parking along Baseline Road during off-peak morning hours.

Navigating Boulder’s Most Popular Open Space Park with Your Dog

We spent the morning exploring the meadows around the Chautauqua Trail that leaves right from the Ranger Cottage. A short, but steep walk took us closer to the base of the First Flatiron. During our session we alternated between landscape portraits with her dog dad and candid moments of her playing with her favorite toy.

Chautauqua offers a great mix of accessible, wide dirt paths and rocky terrain. But because it’s one of the most popular spots in town, it’s almost always busy. If your dog gets anxious, reactive, or easily distracted around lots of passing dogs and runners, I’d recommend some of the other quieter OSMP trails that have beautiful Flatirons views with fewer crowds.

Planning Your Chautauqua Session: OSMP Permits & Local Tips

Between OSMP rules, seasonal parking shuttles, and trail traffic, a little local know-how goes a long way here.

Chautauqua Parking Cheat Sheet:

• Summer Weekends & Holidays (Memorial Day-Labor Day | 8 am - 5 pm): Paid parking is $2.50/hr via the ParkMobile app or onsite pay stations. (Note: Unlike other Boulder OSMP trailheads, cars registered in Boulder County do not get free parking here during peak summer weekends).
Weekdays & Off-Season (Fall through Spring): 100% free all day, every day for everyone.
• Free Summer Weekend Alternative: Park for free in downtown Boulder parking garages on summer weekends and ride the free Park-to-Park Shuttle straight to Chautauqua. The shuttle is dog-friendly! (However: while dogs can ride the shuttle, they are strictly prohibited on Pearl Street Mall. Please make sure your shuttle boarding or parking avoids walking directly through restricted mall areas.)
