Picking the Perfect Pet Photographer

Pets are an important part of our families, but they can be challenging to get really amazing photos yourself. Luckily, pet photographers exist to help you with that exact problem. The process of finding a photographer and figuring out what to expect can be overwhelming, but I’ve got you covered. Here are some important details to consider when searching for a pet photographer, from a professional pet photographer.

Is their style reflective of your own?

Photographic style varies across photographers and finding a photographer whose work resonates with you is extremely important. When looking a photographer’s body of work do you find yourself drawn to do you traditional poses? Or maybe you’d prefer candids, giving your pet the freedom to bounce around so that their energy is reflected in the final images? It is important that style aligns with yours.

Can you view a full client gallery?

Access to a full client gallery is a great way to assess a photographer’s style and to make sure they will deliver a consistent level of quality beyond a handful of images they may highlight on their website. The ability to view the galleries of a photographer can tell you so much about what to expect from your own shoot and the capabilities of the photographer which you may not be able to learn otherwise. Don’t be shy in asking to view a full client gallery before you decide to book.

What is included in the session?

Something you may not think about prior to booking is what the session price includes. Are multiple pets included? Are any prints or digital files included? Some photographers require an ordering session after the shoot. Another thing to keep in mind is that some businesses have minimum amounts you are required to spend. Oftentimes, this can be found on the photographer’s website but it’s always in your best interest to make sure you understand what is included and what is purchased separately.

What is the turnaround for photo delivery?

The wait time for receiving your photos after the session differs depending on the photographer as well. You should consider how long you’re willing to wait for your photos after the session and compare that to the photographers' average wait time. Furthermore, it is important to know if the images you’ll be viewing in your proofing gallery will be fully edited or if that will only be done after purchase as this, too, could affect not only turnaround, but your initial impression of the images as well.

Are they insured?

Your photographer being insured is very important in case something unexpected happens. On such an exciting day it is possible that your furry friend gets a little too excited and knocks into some equipment; assuming your photographer has insurance, this isn’t a big deal. In order to avoid added fees and stress to both you and your chosen photographer, make sure they are insured!

Do they have a contract?

It may sound silly to have a contract with your photographer, but it really can make the process so much more straightforward for the both of you. A simple contract that outlines what you can expect and the rate of the package you chose means avoiding any surprises or miscommunications. A contract is a great way to protect both you and the photographer.

Do they have the appropriate permits?

Surprisingly enough, many locations in Colorado require a commercial use permit to photograph there. Specifically, many popular locations around Boulder County (such as Chautauqua, South Mesa, etc.) and Jefferson County (Mount Falcon, White Ranch, Matthew Winters, etc.) require such permits. Check with your photographer to ensure they carry a current permit. The last thing you want is to be interrupted during your session with a fine and being told to leave.

Do they offer flexible scheduling?

Life happens. Even the most well-planned session can be waylaid by many unpredictable events such as bad weather or even a bad haircut from the groomer. Check in with your photographer to see if they allow for free rescheduling in the event something unforeseen happens.

Are they well-versed in animal behavior?

Having a photographer that can capture the essence of your pet is absolutely necessary. Make sure that your photographer can elicit photogenic behaviors and snag pictures of moments that are fleeting. Animals can be very unpredictable, so it is incredibly important that your photographer can creatively problem-solve. You are paying for photos that you love; make sure your photographer can deliver.
